BIPAVER Retreading

BIPAVER is widely regarded as the European retread industry's most active and influential trade association, representing National retreading associations and leading suppliers to the retreading industry from 9 countries.

The National Associations of Spain, Portugal, Italy, UK (see Retread Manufacturers Association at www.greentyres.com), Sweden (see Dackspecialisternas Riksforbund at www.drf.net), Finland and Norway are currently in membership and a campaign to encourage other EU States to support the work of BIPAVER is underway.

Membership is open to National Associations representing the retreading industry and individual members from countries not already represented by an Association.

Membership is not restricted to tyre retreaders - any organisation or individual with an involvement in the industry, either direct or indirect, is invited to apply for membership. Details of membership are available from the RMA by e mailing rma@greentyres.com

Originally formed in Switzerland in 1954 to represent the interests of both tyre retreaders and retailers, BIPAVER now operates from the UK and was completely restructured two years ago to represent exclusively the tyre retreading industry. At that time the organisation was renamed as BIPAVER - The European Retread Manufacturers Association. The Retread Manufacturers Association, the National Association representing the interests of the UK retreading industry carries out the administration of BIPAVER.

BIPAVER provides members with a powerful political voice in Brussels on matters relating to the tyre retreading industry, and is regularly consulted and involved in the development of EU legislation. In recent years this has included the development of ECE Regulations 108 and 109 for retreading which are now widely used throughout Europe. There are moves in the EU to introduce mandatory requirements in the form of a Directive to ensure implemention of these Regulations throughout Europe and BIPAVER is currently involved in this consultation.

BIPAVER has strong technical representation in Geneva to ensure the Regulations remain up to date and workable. Tyre noise, wet grip, rolling resistance and waste issues are other items high on the agenda at present.

BIPAVER is also committed to tackling anti-competitive practices against retreaded tyres and is currently involved in a Barrier to Trade action against Brazil. Every opportunity is taken to raise awareness of the environmental advantages of retreading and remove any historical poor perception of the industry. Future plans include promotional campaigns to highlight these advantages and provide evidence of retreadings contribution to tyre recycling, not forgetting their high standards of quality and safety.

In summary BIPAVER's main objectives are;

  • provide an effective forum where policies of mutual interest can be agreed between members · directly influence Governments, whether National, European or International
  • provide a channel of communication with European tyre manufacturing organisations such as BLIC and ETRTO
  • promote members' views regarding technical issues relating to retreading and associated standards, such as repair
  • influence EU legislation on all tyre retreading related matters
  • raise awareness of the benefits of tyre retreading to the public and private sector
  • promote its activities and objectives to all agencies and organisations that might influence BIPAVER's activities
